My New Year’s Resolution

Well, it’s one day into the New Year and I’m thinking of a resolution. I try every year to make one and stick to it, but I’m not always successful. So here I am again, scratching my head wondering what the heck I’m going to do this year.

Then, it came to me as Liam and I were sitting on the couch watching TV. A weight loss commercial came on and Liam turned to me, looked up at me, then pushed his index finger into my stomach. As his little finger disappeared into my jelly belly he said, “You know what Dad, you need to lose some weight…a lot of weight.” I laughed, but of course I started taking inventory of my body, and “yes” I need to lose weight. I haven’t dieted or worked out in well over three years, and it has finally caught up to me.

As funny as Liam’s comment was, it really struck a chord in me. Not only do I want to be healthy for myself, but more importantly for my kids. I’m so blessed to have such an amazing family–I want to be there for graduations. weddings, and grandchildren.

I know my resolution sounds dramatic, but when I Iook at my little brood and gorgeous wife, they’re all I have…and all I need. So this resolution is a reflection of my charmed and beautiful life.

As I say goodbye to 2012, I am so grateful for my little miracle baby Finn and the love of my life’s health. It was touch and go, but they’re here and together we face 2013 with hope and happiness.

2013 is going to be quite the SCENE.

I hope you all had a wonderful New Year’s and I may all your dreams and wishes come true this next year.

What is your resolution for the new year?

  • Dolphingirl

I thought long and hard about my New Years resolution and I’m just not going to make one this year. I never keep them so I think I’ll just skip it this year and just let life happen as it happens. Oh and Dean you don’t need a diet you look just fine. You’ll get your exercise running after the kids.

I don’t have to think hard at all. I have precarious health (a transplant) so my resolution is as always to do the best that I can to take care of it and protect my transplant and resulting health problems that it and the anti-rejection drugs cause.
I also need to be less serious and enjoy more.

  • StephSCO

Well, Dean, you got a weight loss buddy if you want one, or two. My hubby and I have both been trying to lose, and it would be cool to share the journey with someone else.

Greetings Dean and Tori and Happy New Years. Staying healthy is a fantastic idea to accomplish that includes exercise and balanced meal. If you think of a reasonable plan that I can follow, I could be one of your fans to totally follow the plan with you (minus very high impact exercises because of my hip). I am visualizing losing 1 pound a week. I would even follow your recipe plan. Let the me (us) know if this is something you would like us to do as your fans, keeping healthy, eating healthy and I will even post a before and after photo with your program if you make one. I would totally make my sister jealous :) I am about 217lbs 5.9ft, the holidays are over, and I’m willing to exercise by your side.

Dean, don’t listen to these silly nilly’s saying you don’t need to eat better or work out. Whether you want to work out and eat better because of health or a little vanity, a healthy diet and exercise is always important and you will be a good example for your kiddos. Especially since you’ve become the gourmet dad, I’m sure you are making yummy meals and treats with butter, sugar and all that screams savory. I’ve been there. Good luck and I hope you share with us some of your recipes with healthier options and to see you on the bicycle you used to love to ride so much! Happy 2013 to you and yours!!

I normally do not keep my resolutions, but I need to lose weight so I am defintely going to be eating healthier! Good luck everyone. xo

I’m not a resolution person but I am also trying to lose weight because I have a 6 year old and would like to be as active as possible for my little girl. Since I love all your receipes, here’s my suggestion! Can you include some low fat versions of your awesome receipes? Or if you come up with some new receipes, give us some calorie reduced options. I’m sure they will be just as delicious! Thanks to you and Tori for such wonderful insights. Looking forward to embracing the New Year and hopes for happiness, health and plenty of laughter in 2013!

Hi Dean, Kids always know just what to say in the simpliest terms that can truely take our breath away by their sweet honesty. Good luck to you on your new resolution to health. Just don’t stop with the yummy reciepes please ! I love them. LOL. Now I have a question. I recently went to purchase my daily planner for the new year, Unfortunately I am looking for a new one because the one I used prior didn’t meet my needs as well as I had hoped for. So If your interested in doing some searching, I’d love to hear about some different daily planners as a post on your blog or T’s. I am wanting a planner that starts Jan,-Dec/Jan. That has a weekly 2 page spread, with a month calender at the start of the weekly pages. Also one that has a place for grocery list & meal planning for weekly dinners for that week. that is basically what I’m looking for. Thanks, Tami

Hey Dean, good reasons, and it’s the reasons that will make you give it a bit more effort. I had a lot of depression over the past couple of years, so I’m trying to focus on positives, and not dwell on negative issues. Good luck to you, and your gorgeous family. May the new year bring love, laughter and happiness. Sheridan.

and think you need to lose a bit of weight.

  • Hangtown_girl

Getting in shape..I’ve made the same resolution for years. I have chronic migraines and I want to actually do it this year! That and grow in a deeper relationship with our Lord..that can always be an improvement.

God Bless you and your sweet family! <3

  • sweetsidet

  • kimcgriffin

  • Mandy Rayfield

Good Luck! I’m right there with you. Years of being a stay at home mom of three, PTA President and more times than not a single mom, I’m a proud military wife. With me taking care of everyone else I’ve let myself go. But I’m determined to change that this year. I to am a food lover, I love to cook. It’s such a wonderful event to cook a good meal. I get great satisfaction from cooking. I’m now making better choices, working out more and putting “me” first. I’ve been a huge fan of you and Tori. I live in Temecula, CA so I loved knowing that you guys had lived in Fallbrook and got to witness the beauty of “OUR WINE COUNTRY”. Good luck!

  • H. S. Bosley is a FREE website and a great way to keep track of what you eat. You just input your current weight, your weight goal, and how many pounds you want to lose a week – 1/2 pound to 2 pounds. It will give you a daily calorie count and you just type in what you have to eat and DRINK!!! It even has all of the Starbucks drinks!!!

  • HeatherT

Dean, I can relate to your resolution. Every year I say I am going to get in shape and take better care of myself, but after about 3 weeks I stop. It is a vicious cycle, but inevitable for most who have good intentions. Life usually gets in the way. I am trying to make exercise fun by working out to Carmen Electras striptease series. I not only get in shape, but my husband will be surprised. I can tell it’s working too because when I was changing last nite he commented on my waist getting smaller! This year, is going to be the year I stick to my guns! good luck to all who are in pursuit of healthier lifestyles.
